I’ve loved this program and learned so much! I feel like I can now take control of my health!
— Kailey, FreshRx graduate

How does it work?

  • Participating physicians can refer patients whose health could benefit from dietary changes, and prescribe them the FreshRx program. Physician referrals are not required, and Lynchburg Grows can also help people enroll .

  • Patients then contact Lynchburg Grows to enroll in a session of classes.

  • A nutrition educator teaches classes in nutrition and cooking.

  • Participants take home a bag of fresh, local produce after each class.

  • Participants may apply to our CSA Scholarship program. This program allows participants to continue receiving bags of fresh produce for the remainder of the growing season. Scholarships are awarded based on availability of funds.

  • Health data is gathered by medical professionals and through self-reporting to monitor progress.

What does it cost?

Nothing! There is NO COST to participants in the FreshRx program. Classes, food, and kitchen/cookware items are all provided for free, thanks to the generous support and collaboration from Centra, Virginia Cooperative Extension, and individual donors.

I just loved it! It really has helped me a lot knowing what to eat and how to read the nutritional information on food packages.
—Kay, FreshRx graduate
